Buying Model Kits in Japan: Where to Find Gunpla and Tamiya—and How to Bring Them Home

Want to buy Gunpla or Tamiya model kits while traveling in Japan?

If you’re into model kits, this is probably something you’ve been looking forward to.

But once you’re standing in a store looking at a big box, you may suddenly think:

“How am I going to get this home?”

Some model kit boxes are surprisingly large.

If you’re only buying one or two kits, they may fit in the suitcase you already have. But if you plan to buy several during your trip, it’s better to think about how you’ll bring them home before you start shopping.

Here’s the short answer:

If you already know you’re going to buy a lot, I recommend ordering an extra suitcase from Amazon Japan and having it delivered to your accommodation.

If you’re not sure how much you’ll buy, another option is to buy a suitcase in Japan only if you end up needing one. The downside is that finding a large suitcase and carrying it back to your hotel takes time and effort.

Amazon Japan (Amazon.co.jp)

You can also bring an extra empty large suitcase from home, but that means carrying another piece of luggage on your way to Japan and from the airport to your accommodation.

In this article, I’ll cover:

  • How to bring model kits home from Japan
  • How to have a suitcase delivered to your accommodation from Amazon Japan
  • Examples of hotels that accept packages before check-in
  • Where to buy Gunpla, Tamiya, and scale models in Japan
  • Japan-exclusive and hard-to-find kits
  • Whether model kits are actually cheaper in Japan
  • Where to look for new, used, and rare kits
  • Whether you can take paints, sprays, glue, and tools on a plane

How Do You Bring Model Kits Home from Japan?

First, decide how you’re going to bring them home.

Many model kits are fairly light. The bigger problem is the size of the box.

A few HG Gunpla kits may fit in your regular suitcase, but larger kits—or simply buying more of them—can take up a lot of space.

A simple way to think about it is:

  • Only 1–2 kits and they fit in your current suitcase → Use your current suitcase
  • You want to keep the boxes in good condition → Use a hard-shell suitcase
  • You plan to buy a lot → Prepare an extra suitcase in Japan
  • Bringing everything home yourself is difficult → Consider shipping the kits to your home

If you want to avoid crushing the boxes, place them near the center of your suitcase and cushion them with clothes.

Before buying another suitcase, check your airline’s checked baggage allowance, size limits, and weight limits.

How much baggage you can check for free—and when extra fees apply—depends on the airline and your ticket type.

Mika

Once you’re actually standing in a model shop, it’s easy to start wanting kits you never planned to buy.

You came all the way to Japan, so it’s better to leave yourself a little room than go home thinking, “I should have bought that one too…”

If You Plan to Buy a Lot, You Can Have a Suitcase Delivered to Your Hotel from Amazon Japan

Here’s how it works:

  1. Check your airline’s checked baggage size and weight limits
  2. Choose an accommodation that will accept packages for guests
  3. Choose a suitcase based on how many model kits you expect to bring home
  4. Check the estimated delivery date on Amazon Japan and place your order
  5. Enter any information the hotel asks for, such as your name or check-in date, in the delivery address
  6. Pick up the package when you check in or during your stay
  7. Pack your model kits in the suitcase and fly home

Check both the estimated delivery date shown on Amazon Japan and the period during which your hotel will accept packages.

For some items, you may also be able to select a delivery date.

The rules vary from one accommodation to another. For example:

  • Some only accept packages during your stay and may not accept anything arriving the day before
  • Some will accept packages before check-in
  • Some only accept packages if you contact them in advance and get approval
  • Some may charge a fee

A suitcase is a large package, so before you order one, ask the hotel whether they can accept a package of that size.

Mika

I explain how to use Amazon Japan and have packages delivered to your hotel in the article below.

Examples of Hotels That Accept Packages Before Check-In

The hotels below do not offer a special Amazon-only package service.

They are simply examples of hotels whose official websites say they can receive packages or luggage before check-in.

A suitcase is larger than a typical parcel, so before booking, ask whether the hotel can receive a package of that size.

Some hotels may also ask you to include more than just your name and phone number when sending a package before your stay, such as:

  • Reservation number
  • Check-in date

If your hotel asks you to include your reservation number or check-in date, you can enter them together with the hotel name in the “Building / Company Name / Room Number” field on Amazon Japan.

Tokyu Stay

Tokyu Stay says in its official FAQ that it can receive luggage sent in advance.

When entering the delivery information on Amazon Japan, include the name on your reservation and your check-in date.

Packages with shipping charges due on delivery or payment due on delivery are not accepted.

Sotetsu Fresa Inn Shimbashi-Hibiyaguchi

Sotetsu Fresa Inn Shimbashi-Hibiyaguchi says it can hold packages marked with the guest’s name and check-in date for up to one week before check-in.

However, it does not accept:

  • Excessively large packages
  • Large quantities of packages
  • Items that require refrigeration or freezing
  • Cash-on-delivery packages

If you’re having a large suitcase sent from Amazon Japan, contact the hotel before ordering.

THE POCKET HOTEL BY SOTETSU

THE POCKET HOTEL BY SOTETSU only accepts packages arriving the day before your stay or on the day of your stay.

The package must include:

  • Sender’s name
  • Guest’s name
  • Date of stay
  • Contact information

Cash-on-delivery packages are not accepted. The hotel also does not accept cash, valuables, fragile items, perishable food, or refrigerated/frozen items.

Shiba

It would be a problem to book a hotel first and only then find out, “Sorry, we can’t accept your package.”

If you’re planning to buy a lot of model kits, check the hotel’s package rules while you’re choosing where to stay, woof.

Japanese Email Example for Asking Your Hotel

You can copy and paste the Japanese message below. Just replace ○○ with your name.

Subject: Question About Receiving a Package

Hello,

My name is ○○, and I am considering staying at your hotel.

I would like to have an item purchased from Amazon Japan delivered to your hotel. Would you be able to receive it for me?

The item will be a suitcase.

If I have the package delivered to your hotel after making a reservation, could you please let me know the following?

How many days before check-in can you receive the package?
What information should I include on the shipping label, such as my reservation number or check-in date?
Do I need to contact the hotel again after making the reservation or after the package has been shipped?

Thank you very much for your help.

If You Want to Shop Tax-Free or Ship Your Model Kits Home

You may be thinking:

“Wouldn’t it be easier to just ship everything home instead of putting it in a suitcase?”

Yes, you can ship model kits from Japan to your home.

However, be careful if you plan to ship items you bought tax-free overseas yourself.

The rules differ for purchases made through October 31, 2026 and purchases made under Japan’s refund-based tax-free system starting November 1, 2026. I explain the details in the tax-free article.

If any of these apply to you:

  • Want to buy model kits tax-free
  • Want to ship the model kits you bought to your home
  • Want to know whether you can ship tax-free items overseas yourself

see the article below.

Where Can You Buy Model Kits in Japan?

Once you know how you’re getting your purchases home, the next question is where to shop.

In Japan, you can find:

  • Gunpla
  • Tanks
  • Aircraft
  • Cars
  • Motorcycles
  • Ships
  • Mini 4WD

and plenty of other model kits.

Different shops specialize in different things.

You can certainly go to Akihabara and browse without a plan, but if you already know what you want, it’s easier to choose your shop based on the type of model you’re looking for.

For Gunpla, Start with THE GUNDAM BASE

If Gunpla is your main goal, THE GUNDAM BASE is one of the first places to consider.

The Tokyo location is on the 7th floor of DiverCity Tokyo Plaza and is an official Gunpla facility.

As of 2026, the official website lists locations in Tokyo, Fukuoka, and New Chitose Airport, as well as stores in areas including Nagoya, Kyoto, Sendai, Hiroshima, and Kanazawa.

Stock of popular Gunpla can change quickly, and during busy periods some locations may use entry restrictions or numbered entry tickets.

Once your travel dates are set, check the latest store information and product availability before you go.

For Tamiya, Visit TAMIYA PLAMODEL FACTORY TOKYO

If you want to browse a large range of Tamiya products in one place, I recommend TAMIYA PLAMODEL FACTORY TOKYO in Shimbashi.

Its official website describes it as a flagship location carrying around 6,000 Tamiya products.

You can find:

  • Scale models of tanks, aircraft, cars, and more
  • Ships and motorcycles
  • Mini 4WD
  • RC models
  • Paints and adhesives
  • Airbrushes and tools

If you want to browse Tamiya model kits and tools in one place, it’s a convenient place to see a wide range of products in one stop.

If you’re looking for Tamiya products outside Tokyo, Tamiya’s official store guide lets you search by category, including scale models, Mini 4WD, and RC.

In Osaka, Joshin Super Kids Land Main Store Is Another Option

If you’re going to Nipponbashi in Osaka, Joshin Super Kids Land Main Store is another good place to look for model kits.

Its official store page lists:

  • Plastic model kits
  • Gunpla
  • RC models
  • Model trains

as products it carries.

The official store page also lists it as a tax-free shop.

Are There Japan-Exclusive or Hard-to-Find Model Kits?

Yes.

Many regular products are sold overseas too, so travelers are more likely to find something special by looking for:

  • Official shop exclusives
  • Event-exclusive items
  • Products with limited distribution in your home country
  • Used or discontinued kits

THE GUNDAM BASE is a good example.

Its official product pages include categories specifically labeled “GUNDAM BASE Limited” and “Event Limited.”

Stock of limited items changes.

Check the official product page for current availability.

THE GUNDAM BASE Official Product Page

Tamiya products also have different levels of distribution depending on the country, so there are products that may be easier to find in Japan.

However, whether something is truly “Japan-exclusive” depends on the specific product.

If you’re specifically looking for exclusives, don’t rely only on the packaging or store display—check the official product information.

Are Model Kits Cheaper in Japan?

Not necessarily.

Buying a model kit in Japan does not automatically mean it will be cheaper.

It depends on the product, exchange rate, price in your home country, store discounts, and whether you can use tax-free shopping.

If you already know which kit you want:

  1. Write down the model number as well as the product name
  2. Check the price in your home country
  3. Compare it with the price in Japan
  4. If it is eligible for tax-free shopping, check those conditions too
  5. Include any extra baggage fees in your calculation

Don’t compare only the sticker price in Japan. Compare the total cost of getting the kit all the way home.

Where Can You Find New, Used, and Rare Model Kits?

For current new releases, you can start with:

  • THE GUNDAM BASE
  • TAMIYA PLAMODEL FACTORY TOKYO
  • Joshin Super Kids Land Main Store
  • Local model shops around Japan

But if you’re thinking:

“I want an older kit” or “I want something I can’t find back home,”

used shops are worth checking too.

Surugaya Akihabara Plastic Model Store

In Akihabara, Tokyo, you’ll find Surugaya Akihabara Plastic Model Store.

Its official page lists:

  • Plastic model kits
  • Paints
  • Tools
  • Model kit magazines

among the products it carries.

There is also a store inventory search.

It’s a good place to browse if you’re not only looking for new kits and want to see what interesting used items might turn up.

Mandarake Complex

Also in Akihabara, Mandarake Complex is another option.

According to the official floor guide, the 6th-floor TOY section carries plastic model kits.

Mandarake also features vintage model kits, so part of the fun is looking for older or unusual items.

Used and vintage items are often one-offs, so the same kit will not always be available.

Mandarake Complex Official Page

When buying used kits, don’t look only at the price. Check the condition of the box, whether anything is missing, and any notes on the item.

If you want the box itself to be part of the collection, you’ll shop differently from someone who only cares about being able to build the kit.

Can You Bring Paints, Sprays, Glue, and Tools Home on a Plane?

Treat these separately from the model kits themselves.

Model paints, sprays, and adhesives may be prohibited in carry-on or checked baggage depending on the product. Always check before you buy them.

Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism says that hazardous materials such as flammable items may be prohibited or restricted in both carry-on and checked baggage.

It also advises travelers to confirm with their airline whether a specific item can be carried or checked.

Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism | Items Restricted in Carry-On and Checked Baggage

ANA’s international flight guidance lists paint and varnish sprays that use flammable gas as items that cannot be carried on board or placed in checked baggage.

ANA | International Flight Restrictions on Sprays and Dangerous Goods

For example, some Tamiya lacquer paints, acrylic paints, enamel paints, and adhesives are flammable.

Tool rules also vary by item.

Some items such as nippers and hobby knives may not be allowed in carry-on baggage but can be accepted in checked baggage. Check the rules of the airline you’re flying with.

Items that could be used as weapons cannot be brought into the aircraft cabin.

Check Liquid Paints and Adhesives Individually

Liquid paints and adhesives cannot all be treated the same way.

Whether they count as dangerous goods depends on their ingredients.

ANA also advises travelers to check the SDS (Safety Data Sheet) or product instructions in advance to see whether an item is classified as dangerous goods.

Before buying, check:

  • Product name
  • Manufacturer
  • Ingredients or SDS
  • Your airline

If your airline cannot determine whether the product can be carried, don’t buy it with the assumption that you’ll be able to take it home.

Mika

My practical recommendation: it’s safer to skip paints and adhesives.

If You’re Buying Model Kits in Japan, Decide How You’ll Get Them Home First

Here’s the order I recommend:

  1. Check your airline’s checked baggage allowance, size limits, and weight limits
  2. Decide whether to use your current suitcase, get an extra suitcase, or ship the kits home
  3. If you plan to order an extra suitcase from Amazon Japan, choose an accommodation that can receive the package
  4. If you plan to ship the kits home, check how that affects tax-free shopping and how you’ll send them
  5. Decide which model kits you want and where you’ll shop

Mika

Once you’ve worked out how you’re getting everything home, all that’s left is to enjoy the model shops.

It’s much more fun to shop when you’re not constantly worrying about whether there’s enough room in your suitcase♪
